• Omar Diaz Newark

    Assistant Division Director, New Jersey Dept. of Transportation

    Born in Belleville, New Jersey, and raised in Newark, Omar Diaz embarked on his educational journey in local schools before advancing to Rutgers University in Newark. He graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in History and a Minor in Urban Education, also earning a secondary teacher certification through the Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP). Omar further enhanced his expertise by obtaining an Executive Master of Public Administration with a 4.0 GPA from Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration in 2015, specializing in Non-Profit and Public Performance Management.

     

    Career Kickoff

     

    Omar began his public service career at Northern State Prison as a Senior Corrections officer before transitioning to the Newark Police Academy to become a police officer. He quickly rose to a unit commander in the Newark Police Major Crimes Criminal Intelligence Division, supervising crucial investigations. Omar's leadership was further recognized when he led the New Jersey State Police's Real-Time Crime Center, coordinating advanced safety operations across various levels of law enforcement.

     

    Achieving the Rank of Captain in Newark

     

    Omar made significant strides in his career by becoming the first Dominican-American Captain in the Newark Police Department. In this role, he managed the Newark Metro Business Downtown District, ensuring safety and overseeing operations. He also spearheaded security strategies at major Newark venues, such as the Prudential Center and Newark Symphony Hall, implementing comprehensive risk management policies.

     

    Transition to State Government

     

    In August 2024, Omar transitioned to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) as the Assistant Division Director. His responsibilities now include overseeing the state's transportation infrastructure, focusing on safety, reliability, and efficient management of New Jersey's highways and public roadways.

     

    Awards and Recognition

     

    Omar's dedication to public service has been recognized with numerous awards, including the FBI Leadership Trilogy Award and a Senate Citation for his outstanding contributions. The International Association of Chiefs of Police has also honored him for his significant impact on law enforcement.

     

    Community Involvement and Teaching

     

    Omar is deeply committed to community engagement. He serves on the advisory board of Good Shepherd Academy and participates in various law enforcement and community organizations. He extends his passion for education through teaching as an adjunct instructor and volunteering at community events, influencing and mentoring future leaders.

     

    Involvement in Real Estate

     

    Alongside his public service, Omar is an active licensed real estate professional associated with several real estate organizations. His involvement in the real estate sector supports community development and helps clients achieve their homeownership dreams.
